Bang H8!
The 8th edition of BANG!, the Bay Area Night Game, was held on September 18th, 2004, in the Haight district of San Francisco. 26 teams turned out to participate, and each team solved 10 puzzles and found 10 locations on their way to the finish line. There were two divisions available to teams: recreational and expert. The puzzles were very similar for the divisions, except that expert puzzles offered less in the way of instructions on how to proceed. Also, puzzle #7 was completely different for each division, though each did involve playing cards. Teams began the night with a start game, which involved word associations. Two members from each team were given one word each, and the goal was for each person to find their matching word amongst the group of 52 start game participants. The matching process went much more quickly than expected, and the start game was over lickety-split in 2 minutes flat. The start envelopes contained 4 puzzles. Teams were then given 2 puzzles at each of locations #4, #6, and #8. The solution to puzzle #10, our Uber-Puzzle involving 7 multi-colored 8's, took teams to the finish line at Martin Mack's on Haight Street. Hints were posted on telephone poles and in business windows throughout the course, usually at a distance of 3-4 blocks from where teams were working on puzzles. Congratulations to recreational team "Everyone Loves Nutella" for winning Bang H8!. They, in conjunction with our expert division winners "The Burninators," will be hosting a future Bang! event, likely Bang #10. Next race: "Kittens, Kittens, Kittens" - winners of Bang #7 - will be hosting Bang #9 in Berkeley in October. Watch the Yahoo! group for the announcment.
